Thinking of Spring...

...or the seed catalogs are piling up, and blossoming polymer is helping me get through the gray days.

So far this winter, 20 seed company catalogs have piled up in my studio. I used to be seriously addicted to seed starting every year for my garden. In previous years I would have been poring over the catalogs for weeks by this time. I may even have had an order or two in.

Which brings me to my current situation. Years of enthusiastic seed starting have left me with a large zip-lock bag full of extra seeds. They fill a whole crisper drawer in my fridge, and have for years. Last year I made a huge effort to scatter sow many of the easy growing flower varieties. As a result I had a huge cutting garden of zinnias, cosmos and calendulas. I still have a large quantity of seeds however, and wrestle with the temptation to order more. Of course I need to at least pick up some zinnias since I adored them last year and now I have no more zinnia seeds!

Until I decide what to do on the seed starting front I've been satisfying my desire for color, flowers, and foliage by working with some bright, custom-mixed polymer colors.

I'm loving Pantone's Color of the Year for 2012, Tangerine Tango, so I started there with my own blended tangerine orange, then worked on some colors that I felt coordinated.

I'm feeling spring already!

Small Steps

When one is deep in a rut it sometimes helps to remember that small steps will eventually help one climb out.

It's been a dry spell creatively for me for quite a while and I really was feeling little or no enthusiasm for jewelry-making. It was a rambling, blog-reading trek one day that landed me at Orion Designs Blog and Vicki Potter's Earwire Tutorial. Suddenly I felt a spark! I can do that!

Although I took jewelry classes in college, I have not utilized any of my metal-working skills since. It's a small step, but I decided to start thinking in basics again. Thanks to Vicki's great tutorial I purchased sterling wire, a bench block, and a chasing hammer. I just finished my fourth pair and am already brainstorming what I will make to hang from my new earwires! Thank you Vicki!

I am a complete sucker for bead shows. Last weekend was no exception and I spent almost too much money on little 10 mm long dagger beads from Eureka Crystal Beads. They looked like they'd make the perfect leaves for little flowers and immediately an idea came to mind.

A day playing around and I had a bouquet of early Autumn blooms in hand! :^)

Japanese anemones are in bloom now. They spread somewhat aggressively in the garden but I forgive them every autumn when their delicate, fluttery petals, intriguing wiry stems and tutu-collared centers enchant.

PESTO!

The mid-to-late-summer garden is one of my favorite times. Who can resist vine-ripe tomatoes still warm from the sun, or cheery zinnia blossoms?

Another seasonal favorite is basil, Ocimum basilicum. So easy to grow from seeds that I just scatter a seed packet and rake it in. A few months later an overly bountiful and wonderfully fragrant basil crop demands harvest and preserving. An extremely tasty and simple way to preserve basil is to make a pulverized mix of basil leaves and olive oil that is known as pesto.

Incorporating a few other tasty ingredients, my pesto recipe is excellent as a pasta topping, toasted bread spread, or condiment. My method of storage is freezing. Due to the oil in the mix it thaws quickly and it easily brings a taste of summer to the winter table.

Ingredients:
1/4 cup pine nuts
3 cloves garlic, peel and lightly crush -I find it easiest to do this simultaneously by crushing lightly with the broad side of a knife blade. The skins will fall off.
2 cups packed basil leaves
1 tsp kosher salt
black pepper to your taste
1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil
1/2 cup grated hard cheese of your choice -Parmesan, Parmigiano-Reggiano, Grana Padano etc...

Wash, dry, and pack 2 cups of fresh basil leaves.

Toast the pine nuts lightly in a 450˚ oven, or in a skillet on the stove and stir if needed. Pine nuts brown/burn quickly so watch carefully!

Place first five ingredients in a food processor and pulse until coarsely combined.

With processor running, drizzle in olive oil. Add cheese and blend until just incorporated.

I spoon pesto into freezer bags and freeze for up to one year, although it never lasts that long. ;^)

A sweet zinnia from my garden. Played around in Photoshop a little. I just love zinnias and finally planted them again after not getting around to it for a few years.

I sowed a mix of several packets in an informal cutting garden. Some of my favorite varieties are "Persian Carpet" and "Cut and Come Again".

Black Spanish Radish

Many years ago I traded some of my garden seeds in an online seed swap. One of the seeds I received as a bonus from the swapper was for an heirloom called Black Spanish Radish.

Since I hadn't requested the seeds and my gardening plate was pretty full they were put into my 'maybe later' bag, which I store in my refrigerator crisper. Every year I would start seed shopping in late January and buy/acquire my new seeds, make my lists of what I wanted to grow, write up my germination plans and start sowing in March or April. Many packets of seeds kept getting bumped to the 'maybe later' bag and as luck would have it this year ended up being the 'use up the maybe later bag' year.

Last night we made a Black Spanish Radish Slaw/Salad using some other vegetables from our garden, our neighbor's garden, and what else we had on hand. Amounts are somewhat fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pantsish as we usually wing it on our recipes. We also believe in seasoning to taste so we highly recommend adding herbs or seasoning to make this to YOUR taste.

Black Spanish Radish Slaw/Salad

2 medium black Spanish radishes -peeled and shredded
1 large cucumber -peeled, de-seeded and cubed
1/2 c carrot rounds -thinly sliced (I used a mandoline)
1/2 c red bell pepper -julienned
2 scallion/green onions -thinly sliced
1 c sour cream -a little more or less is fine
1 Tbsp apple cider vinegar
1-2 Tbsp Dijon mustard
salt and pepper to taste
other spices/herbs as to taste

Combine all and chill. Served here as lunch with a few fresh green pea pods and a sprinkling of black salt. Also good layered open-face on dense brown German bread with hard-boiled egg slices and some Havarti cheese.

New Tool Alert - Foredom Flex Shaft

My trusty little Dremel has been chugging along for the last 15 years or so. It came with a flex shaft attachment, but I never really found it comfortable to use - too stiff. I've done all my work holding the main body of the tool. I replaced the motor brushes once and now the tool is making similar straining noises, slowing down, and not working at variable speed - it holds just one speed.

Between the age of the Dremel, the problems it's having and personally being tired of the weight of the tool I've decided to upgrade.

Here's the newest addition to the studio...... my new Foredom Flex Shaft SR-2272. It has a variable speed foot control and a runs so smoothly! The flex shaft is very comfortable and seems much more flexible than the Dremel. I'm so excited I cleaned and organized the workspace - almost like I'm trying to impress. :^)

New Wooden Bust

My newest wood bust arrived yesterday. This one is more realistic (and shinier) than my taste has been running to. Something about the way the hair was carved, the thick neck and the hunched-looking shoulders just endeared him to me. He feels like a cartoon character, but I can't put my finger on the style... maybe a little Kliban.

Red Raspberry Reprieve

Around ten years ago I was very involved in trading garden plants at plant swaps. I acquired some red raspberry starts and plopped them in the corner of my vegetable garden. For a year or two they grew a little and gave a few berries. They were well behaved and I had high hopes.

Over the coming years the raspberries launched a full assault. They sent up shoots everywhere and wherever a branch touched the ground it rooted and sent up a new plant. The other downfall was the berries. There never seemed to be a great amount and when they did appear they coincided with the appearance of the Japanese beetles who quickly covered the berries.

Early this spring I told my husband I was planning on ripping them all out of the garden since they took up too much room and underwhelmed with their fruit. Well they must have been listening - this year I have a bumper crop and the kids have been picking and eating until full! I pulled some out that were going far beyond boundaries and have made an allowance.... they can stay, but will be held to their corner. At least for a few more years. :^)

A new cuff bracelet I made last week. It isn't really this red, actually a rather bold, bright orange. The lighting gave it a red cast. I liked the pattern and texture on this piece and while photographing it for listing on Etsy I just kept coming in closer... and closer.

"Turtle in the Road!"

That was what I yelled as I drove my children to the bus stop for their last day of school.

I flashed back to a very sad, hot summer day a long time ago, when I jumped out of my car in a vain attempt to save a turtle stuck in the road. I was standing on the side of the road waiting for one last car to pass before I could run out to grab the turtle..... well - that last car.... I cried for quite a long time.

This turtle was not going to be left in the road! I stopped and scooped up the turtle who immediately pulled in his (gender verified by herp loving friend) head and hissed. I set him down on the passenger-side floor mat and he immediately started crawling around. The children were so excited and wanted to know what we were going to do with him. At first I said I would take him home and let him go in our garden, but then I remembered the lawn-cutting crew who managed to run over a rabbit last year and I thought not.

A local park, Monocacy Park, has a nature area - perfect! After the children got on the bus I took him home for some photos.

The children had a half-day for the last day so after they came home we all went to the park where we let him go. He happily ambled off into the woody underbrush as we said our goodbyes and wished him well.

Shattered

One thing that I always take along when I do shows is a sketchbook. Those stretches between customers are a great time for reflection and exploration. The latest show I'm in has been a very fertile ground for sketching - a little thin on customers, but in a very creative setting. There are a number of new ideas I'm looking to explore in the near future.

Having done some faceting in the past, I began to explore the idea of a shattered faceted piece. This ring is the first prototype and while there are things I like about it, it doesn't quite capture the effect I wanted. The lines are a little thicker than I would like and the division of space a little too regular.

Every year I look forward to the peonies blooming in the garden. Some are plants that I started from sections of my parent's plants. They are old, originating with the first owner of their Victorian - probably 60 years old at least. Some are newer plants that I purchased.

Their scent is heavenly. The fuchsia flowers smell largely like peonies. The medium pink is the variety 'Sarah Bernhardt' and is my favorite. The older varieties don't have as showy of a flower - but the scent!... one smells very strongly of rose and the other - clove/cinnamon!

This overflowing and gloriously blowsy bouquet is the result of the inevitable rainstorms that flop my peonies every year. They give me a week of justifiably extravagant bouquets.

Weighting it Down

Your show tent that is! When doing an outdoor show with a tent weights are pretty much a necessity. Unless you want your tent to become airborne - possibly ruining your work, other people's work and risking injury to yourself and others, weight your tent!

There are a lot of options out there for weighting the legs of your tent. Some people purchase tent weight bags or make their own with sand. Others haul empty water cooler bottles that they fill with water. Since I wasn't sure that water would be available I rejected that method. Other people use weight disks from barbell sets, actual barbells and cinder blocks. I wanted something that would go with the look of the tent and was something I could make myself. A quick Google search brought up a fantastic tent weight tutorial on the Etsy Metal Blog.

I won't try to copy the tutorial here, please visit the links if you'd like to try to make your own. I just thought I'd show a few of my steps and my optional/additional handle method.

Here is my PVC in capping process, with the 8 inch eye bolt through the drilled cap. This end will be on the bottom when the concrete is poured. Nuts and a washer are threaded on the eye bolt for extra strength when embedded in concrete.

Here I have shoveled the Quikrete concrete mix into the tubes and I am waiting for it to set more before I cap the open end.

Here is a finished weight with my optional handle. The Etsy Metal Blog tutorial mentions an option where the handles are screwed on. I really liked the look, but the hardware store didn't have sturdy enough handles (everything is stamped/formed sheet anymore...where is the solid metal?!?). I opted instead to use two large hose clamps and a length of knotted rope.

The tent up, and weighted! The weights are approximately 35 pounds/ 16.5 kilos each.

Considering I bought the tent on a Thursday, started shopping for all the weight supplies at 9:00 am Friday, and had the tent up by 10:00 am Saturday I was pretty pleased with the results. Thank you Etsy Metal Blog!

Awesome Venue for an Art Show

I've been very busy preparing for a series of shows that I am participating in at an exciting new venue here in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

Growing up here, almost everyone had ties to 'The Steel' - Bethlehem Steel, that is. Fathers, brothers, uncles, neighbors... someone you knew worked there. You couldn't help but be aware physically as well. Driving through many parts of the town offered impressive views of large office buildings, rail lines, and most spectacularly - the blast furnaces and stacks. I remember many childhood drives past the plant, being awed by the massive size and gritty, raw industrial power. Night drives were always a time to be on the lookout for 'the fire on the stacks'. Tall towering burn-off stacks with leaping, glowing flames at the top were mysterious and dangerously exciting to my young eyes.

But Bethlehem Steel's steel making days have ended and for many years the structures and buildings have sat empty and decaying. Still industrially beautiful, but in the way of age and rust.

I had heard a little about new developments underway at the plant. A new casino went in and I heard talk of an arts venue, as well as a skate/bike park. Other distractions kept me busy and I was unaware of the spectacular changes taking place - revitalization and new life taking root in an exciting new venture/venue called ArtsQuest™ Center at SteelStacks™.

I was approached by a staff member at ArtsQuest™ about applying for their new SteelStacks™ Arts and Antiques Market . The market runs all summer long, May 14th - Aug 28th. I applied and was accepted for four weekends - May 14th-15th, 21st-22nd and June 4th-5th, 11th-12th. When I arrived to set up I was immediately impressed by the power of the venue. My tent has the orange tablecloth.

While the first weekend was rainy and sales were slow, the enthusiasm of almost everyone involved was so infectious. There is a definite feeling that this event is just going to continue to grow! The ArtsQuest™ Center at SteelStacks™ venue is open and has events ongoing 365 days of the year. The view of ArtsQuest™ Center from my tent.

As I was leaving after the first day, my tent closed up tight for the night, the colorfully lit stacks as a backdrop brought back an oddly familiar sense of mystery and wonder.

Focus: Letters

I had largely forgotten about being contacted by Lark Books about some of my letter photographs on Flickr.

Some time ago I submitted releases and gave links to the photos I thought might be considered. Well a few days ago UPS pulled up and I couldn't for the life of me remember what I had ordered! I usually am anxious to receive supplies or new collection items so I was quite puzzled.

Oooooo! When I saw the return address label for Stirling Publishing I had an idea what it was. I found that two of my photographs were included. My kids are excited that Mom is in print. I think it's pretty neat too.

I really like this figure. No face or arms but lots of character. I was told it could be cottonwood and was found in a barn in Arizona. Some gnaw marks suggest rodent action. Here 'he'? is posed in the underside of a small bench set on end.

Sneak Peek - Ring Necklaces

I'm realizing that some people may be a little scared of my acrylic rings. How will the tall 'face' wear? Will they be knocking it on things?

I've decided to offer some in a more versatile format. Strung on a simple knotted cord they are a fun casual necklace. Easily removed they can be worn as a ring. Of course now I'm wanting to make some pieces similar to these that are meant to be worn entirely as necklaces - square holes, smaller holes etc...

Some day I need to actually list all these new pieces I make. If only the photographing and editing was as fun as the making!

I was never really comfortable taking self portaits. I have decided to get away from the posed and stilted ones I usually end up with. Wildly spinning around the room, dancing, singing, shaking my head - letting it all out -having fun.

Really happy with how this one came out. Maybe it's all the new hair, but I love the mood.

Carved 'Racy' Lady

She is legless and armless but her head turns. her body appears to have been lathe turned then hand carved. She has quite nice buttocks, ample hips and detailed nipples.

I wonder, was she a high-school woodshop 'naughty' creation? Was she meant to be a doll? She seems a little racy for that. She seems to have 1950's aesthetic with the hairstyle.

She is now mine. Newest addition to the carved wood people collection.

This is a piece I started a year ago. Part of my Moonglow series, it sat in a box for a year. I've recently taken another look at this series and am doing a little re-working of finished and unfinished pieces.

This piece is made by embedding epsom salt in the clay, curing, and then removing the crystals - soaking is an easy method. Silvery acrylic paint details the impressions.

A charcoal moonglow bead is in the center and a silvery ceramic disk bead forms a simple toggle clasp.

There is not much that is more cozy than a cat sleeping on a pretty quilt in the sun.

The sun actually washed out the colors in the bright parts of the photo and obliterated them in the shadows. Playing around in Photoshop to try and repair led to experimenting which led to a fun saturated-yet-washed-out poster effect.

Brightened up a gray day.

The faces have been painted and sanded. Next I need to figure out how I want to use them. I like the idea of just a single head on a cord - that seems to be how I do most of my work. I am admittedly not a talent when it comes to combining elements in a multi-beaded manner. This is something I need to challenge myself with - do some growth and exploration.

Meanwhile so many of the faces are reminding me of people and characters although none are based on any existing person. I may have to name them!

Prime Numbers -Family Geekery

It just tickled me today that I realized that my family members' ages are all prime numbers right now - 7,11,41,43. The fact that I'm the largest number, (oldest) of the bunch, only slightly dampens the enjoyment. My daughter also has an affinity for primes and chose her basketball jersey, 43, specifically for that reason - she is one cool 11 year-old...

Today just seemed a good day to celebrate our prime-ness - 3/11/11.

New Wooden Head Fits My Mood

I have a thing for carved wooden heads. There is a certain type that I am attracted to and I scour Ebay and Etsy for great finds, but unfortunately on Ebay I am usually outbid on the type I like best. Sometimes I torture myself by looking through completed items and just yesterday was heartbroken to see my ideal carved man's head that went for a Best Offer of $10! $10!!!!

Woe. Note to myself that I need to check Ebay more often.

I did however then browse Etsy and picked up this hatchet-faced fellow. He is happily settling in amongst the rest of my collection. Yay!!!

Now to the mood - a bit of a depression and a bit brooding.

Some new pieces, hand molded. These are flat-backed and top drilled side to side to be used as pendants, but I think I will also be doing some without holes next. I'm thinking of the un-drilled ones being combined in a grouping as a wall piece or selling as supplies.

They're very fun and freeing to make and I like the occasional fingerprint - they are handmade after all and I like leaving a bit of a personal mark on each piece. They are smallish, averaging 1 inch high and about 1/2 inch thick - excluding noses ;^)

Photo Styling Tip - Vellum

I am always looking for different and interesting tricks for styling my product photos. Often I will find an interesting fabric or texture, but the colors or patterns may be too strong and they overpower the piece that I am photographing.

I have found that a very simple sheet of translucent vellum paper is a great styling aid. Vellum is commonly available in most art supply stores. Look in the fine art or scrap-booking sections. It can be a little expensive but if used carefully one sheet should last for many photos.

Here is a mousepad that I had made using a photo of some of my unfinished pendants.

The vellum softens the colors and my rue pendant is brought to the forefront.

I love to collect and buy artwork from other artists. As well as decorating my home they can be useful and beautiful styling props. I would suggest contacting the artist if you are planning on using their work. Asking permission is always appreciated and many artists will be very happy to have you use their work especially if you credit and link. Here is a beautiful mosaic piece from Margaret Almon of NutmegDesigns and the resulting styling.

I really love the bold patterns and naturally lovely colors of Tracy Melton's work at Focuslineart.

Even three dimensional objects can be turned into intriguing backdrops when you use vellum. Margaret Oomen's fabulous stones, found at RESURRECTION FERN take on a delicate mystery.

There are so many other possibilities that I want to try out - ferns/leaves, wood type, colored cords, marbles, starfish/shells. I think it also is a good way to create a unified feel using diverse materials.

Scented Geranium Resurrection

Let me start by saying that I love, love, love! scented geraniums!

Every year I make an early spring road trip to Countryside Farm and Greenhouse, Inc. in Fleetwood, Pennsylvania. They have a great selection of scented geraniums, and I also stock up on container and bedding annuals, perennials, and herbs. They have quite extensive vegetable plants as well, but I usually only pick up a few since I do a lot of my own vegetable starting.

I have tried to over-winter the scented geranium plants before but never really succeeded. They were usually quite large by summer's end and I didn't have the room for them all. This year I decided to take a different approach.

First thing I did was to cut the plants back hard in late fall, drag the containers into the garage and leave them, un-watered and un-lighted until late January, when I then brought in the wheelbarrow and started de-potting them.

As you can see, most of the top growth is dead but some new growth is starting from the roots. The plants are much smaller and easy to re-pot. I just do a little additional root trimming, re-pot and put under lights.

A week or two after re-potting the plants look a little anemic and weedy, but new growth is shooting up!

It is now late February and the plants are lush, green, and provide a heavenly scent when lightly brushed. I've managed to resurrect several varieties: Staghorn Peppermint, Coconut, Cinnamon, Rober's Lemon Rose, Apple (my favorite - with its tiny velvety leaves), Orange, Red-Flowered Rose, Attar of Roses, and Chocolate Mint. The only variety I lost was Lemon.

Don't worry Countryside Farm! I'll be back this spring!

For those of you not in the know, it is a method of composting using worms, usually red wigglers. They live in stacked bins in your house and you feed them kitchen scraps. How cute and cool is that!

For those in the know, and those currently vermicomposting, tips and suggestions please! Did you buy a bin, from who, and do you like it? Did you make your own and have plans you could share? Where do you get your worms?

A simple thought.

Who is my customer? Who am I trying to speak to?

How have I managed to sell for two years on Etsy without giving deep thought to who I am trying to connect with? Perhaps blind faith in the system, naiveté about the ability of the marketplace to showcase my work -and the ability of the customer to find me in the vast sea of shops that I am a part of.

Thank you to Lee Wolfe of One Clay Bead for her article on her The Beauty You Love blog. She writes about April Bowles-Olin's thoughtful workshop, Attract Your Target Market — You're Not Walmart.

It has compelled me to look at my shop in a much more critical light. I am seeing the story I am not telling, the people I am not connecting with and it's really such a basic, simple thing.

It's been quite a while since my last post, whose title spoke to my situation I was finding myself in at the time.

I could make excuses, but quite bluntly my personal life took a huge hit. I needed a break to devote most of my time and energy to reconnecting with my family -my children and my husband.

It is very sobering to reach a point in your life where you take those around you for granted, and then wake up to realize things are a mess and you're not sure how you got where you are... or where you're going... or who will be there when you get there!

It's been a tough summer and there will be more tough times ahead, but I'm feeling like we're on the right path again.

Oh, and the light? I suffer in the winter and finally broke down and bought a therapy light. I can truthfully say it makes a difference.

Did you ever have one of those 'vacations' that you need to recover from?

I closed my Etsy shop for the month of May, sort of a 'vacation'. I had a large project that I was involved with for my children's elementary school that required my full attention. I am on the ArtsDay Committee and agreed to organize a mural for the fifth grade ArtsDay project. In addition to the mural came all kinds of "heck breaking loose".

Before I even began the mural I went to an Orthopedic doctor about shoulder pain I've been having and discovered that I have a partially torn rotator cuff and pinching acromion and will need surgery -but that's being put off until August so let the mural begin!

I decided that the mural would be comprised of small Masonite/hardboard panels that the children would paint. They would then be assembled like tiles to complete the full mural. First I needed to buy a table saw, which I did on Mother's Day as a very nice present to myself. :^) Then I needed to assemble the table saw, which I did myself -thank you very much!

To complete the murals I needed 120 Masonite panels so I cut them, sanded the edges and gave them three coats of primer on the front, two coats on the back, painted the edges and finished them with one coat of gesso on the front.

The school's art teacher let me borrow her 40 year-old, rescued-from-a-dumpster-in- the-1970's opaque projector to enlarge the mural artwork onto the panels, then I started painting the artwork lines.

Right about now was the point that life started to become a little crazy. Driving to the bus stop with the children one morning I heard a thumpthumpthump and discovered a bolt embedded in my tire. Is this from the table saw?!? I deny it...

After putting them on the bus it was off to the tire center. A few hours later I headed home but the steering wheel was shimmying more than I liked. At home my husband reminded me that last time our tires were rotated they mentioned that they had trouble balancing one so they put it on the back. The tire center re-rotated my tires and the off-balance one was now on the front...I'll need to have it fixed, but back burner this -we'll deal with it later... time to paint more murals.

The next morning I'm about to take the children to the bus when we notice that their two gerbils who share a cage are involved in a "Gerbil Death Match" there is gerbil blood! A quick check online informed me that upon maturity gerbils will begin to prepare for potential mates by eliminating the competition and will fight to the death. So there is no way I can just convince them that a cute female gerbil just ain't gonna happen?!? So off to the pet store for a complete second gerbil habitat. So much for the 'very social and friendly' promises of the pet shop employee. Back home for gerbil re-habitation and more mural painting. You will notice there are no photos of the bloody gerbils... I thought that best.

I'm starting to feel a little frazzled and have been putting in a lot of very late nights on these mural panels...plus there's my own "oh that's right I have kids!" to be fed and laundry and dishes...oh and a very patient husband...

ArtsDay arrives and the kids have a lot of fun painting the panels.

I've coded the backs to a grid. As they finish their panel they place it on the grid. They really get a kick out of placing their piece and seeing the mural come together. The painting sessions are a huge success and the kids are so excited that their work will be hung in the lobby 'forever!". I leave the murals at school to dry over the weekend.

Sunday the neighbor tills our garden and my husband informs me that the groundhog family living under our porch has eaten the kale and broccoli I started before I can even get them planted. :^(

On Monday I bring the finished murals home to re-do the black line-work, then I run the car to the tire service center again and we decide to buy two new tires. One to replace the earlier fix and one to replace the off balanced one. My husband calls in an appointment for my daughter, since she's been complaining that her sternum hurt from being hit playing laser-tag. I pick her up early and have her seen by the pediatrician... she's okay, probably just a bruise...whew!

Uh-oh! After we come home my daughter informs me that the basement play-room 'smells funny' and is 'wet'. We discover, after my husband rips up the (two year-old) carpeting and removes some drywall, that there is a pin-hole leak in the piping in the wall. Small favor, at least it's trash night.

Tuesday morning daughter stays home with a 24 hour bug. She is ill once, runs a slight fever and sleeps most of the day. I'm still re-painting black mural line-work. Son comes off the bus with his glasses broken. My husband takes him to get a new pair. Luckily they're still under warranty! I finish up all the line work and give the murals a coat of protective finish. To bed by 11:30. Wow! An early night!

Wednesday! Installation day! I'm at school by 9:30 with coffee, panels, duct tape, and paneling adhesive in hand. Another Mom comes to help. We stick all the panels up with duct tape first to make sure everything is straight and square. Once they are up we remove them one by one and apply adhesive. Anticlimactically it takes us only an hour per mural to finish them. As children pass in the halls they comment on the murals. The children who painted them point out their panels. Teachers stop to look and comment. People smile. They're done. Really? Done? DONE!

So am I. I need a vacation.

Sweet Little Garden Break

So I haven't been out in the garden as much as I need or promised myself to be.

I've been involved with a mural project for my children's Elementary school and it's eating up all my time and energy. I'm a little nervous about how it is going to turn out. I bought a table saw to cut up Masonite into roughly 7 x 11 inch rectangles. I designed the mural based on questions I asked the fifth graders about their school experiences - favorite subject, favorite book, what they learned in school etc...

Each fifth grader is going to get one of the small Masonite pieces with a section of the mural on it, kind of like a puzzle. The finished murals will be 35 inches high x 66 inches wide and there are four murals. All the pieces are cut. They just need to be primed, gessoed, and painted with the line-work. The final, color painting will be done next Friday, ArtsDay at the school. I'm very nervous.

I took a break for fresh air and a chance to check out the garden. This is a blossom of Calycanthus floridus, also known as Sweet Bubby bush, or Carolina Allspice. The flowers have a leathery, stiff feel to them, and the aroma is pleasant but a little odd. It reminds me of cider or overripe apples.

Today is Mother's Day and I am posting in appreciation of all the Mothers out there, but especially with love for my Mother and Grandmother.

In this photo my Mom, Lorraine,is to the right and her mother, my Grandmother Violet, is holding me after my Baptism. My brother Michael is on the left, Andrew on the right -I love their jackets and bow ties! My sister Sara is adorable in her pink dress and hat. Only my youngest brother, John, is not in the photo.

My Mother raised five children. I wouldn't say we were poor, but I'm sure money was tight. We didn't always have the most or the newest 'things' but we did have a lot of love. When I was little my Mom made cheese sandwiches so I could picnic outside. My Mom taught me how to drive. Now that I have children of my own she always is happy to help out. My children love their Nana. My Grandmother Violet's house was always a place full of laughter, love and excellent pies. :^) I am sorry that my Grandmother passed away before she could meet my children. I know she would have delighted in them. She had a special place in her heart for little ones.

To these wonderful Moms I say thank you and I will love you always!

One Year

April 16th was the one year anniversary of the hospital visit where I discovered I had ovarian cancer. The previous days had been lovely and I had been enthusiastically working in the overgrown garden, hoping to work off what I thought was 'winter weight'.

The onset of pain in my side sent me to the emergency room on the 16th. They recommended I see my Gyn. and from there began quite a sudden and scary journey. It felt like the life I thought I had control over had suddenly become a car on a rollercoaster. I was going for a ride but I didn't know where I was going, it was scary as hell and there was no getting off!

Now a year later I am still recovering. Scars are fading and I can lift the laundry basket again without being lectured. I am slowly building up strength in my legs and struggling with swelling in them as a complication of the surgery.

It is not all difficult though. Aside from the troubles I have been given so many gifts... The gift of watching my children grow and play, talking to and laughing with and kissing my husband, time with my family and friends, cats to sit on my lap and chase toy mice (and scratch all the furniture), art to make and art to buy, seeds to plant and gardens to weed, and trips to plan (France and Denmark this summer!!!).

So this post today is a thank you to the world for the year I've had and for the many more years I plan on having! It is also a Thank You to the family and friends who have been so wonderfully caring and supportive during the past year. I feel blessed to have you all in my life.

Tillandsia Addiction

I was first introduced to the beauty of air plants, Tillandsia, on Fringe's wonderful blog, Fringe.

Her posting, Air plants are easy, led me to begin my own air plant collection.

Shown above are my new acquisitions wired onto the antlers of a gifted (found by my brother in the woods) deer skull. I wrapped wire around the antlers and made little loops for the plants to sit in. The plants are easily removable for watering. Above the skull is a treasured mosaic mandala given to me by my friend, the wonderfully talented Margaret Almon of nutmegdesigns on Etsy. I think the plants and mandala complement each other wonderfully.

It's not easy for me to grow houseplants as I have two cats who will search out and destroy most foliage. Having these wired up high is no guarantee -these cats like to go high, but I am hopeful!

I always plant extra seeds every year, just in case I have low germination. Almost every year most things germinate just fine. :^) That leaves me with the always a little sad job of culling since I can't possibly grow 30 broccoli plants. For now though I just enjoy the color, the life and the possibility that they hold.

Owl Addiction -Molly and McGee

So a nesting pair of owls has been a bit of an addiction lately. It's crazy when it's 12:00 midnight and you're glued to the screen with thousands of other people watching an owl sleep. People all over the world have been tuning in to see Molly and McGee taking care of their eggs, eating rats, mice and rabbits, 'bonding', coughing up owl pellets, and turning eggs.

One has finally hatched. A small owlet named Max now has center stage while he struggles to hold his head up, screeches, flops around, is preened by his mother, eats shredded rodents and waits for his siblings to hatch.

Carlos and Donna Royal set up a nest box two years ago. It has taken until now for some owls to move in but it has been well worth the wait. Carlos is a very well-spoken, down-to-earth host. He and Donna have taken to the publicity and interest in their project with apparent ease and grace. Carlos carefully and thoughtfully responds to questions concerning Molly, McGee and their brood. He is even hosting discussions with school children and chat members.

If you have a few moments stop in and see Molly, McGee and their growing family. You may just stay for a while.

Polymer Zinnia Buttons -or I Can't Wait for Summer

One of my favorite annuals in the garden is the Zinnia. I can't wait for summer to enjoy zinnias in my garden. Until then I've been making some sets of polymer clay buttons and dreaming of my cutting garden.

I love the tall and colorful variety "Cut and Come Again" for cut flowers in the house. So cheerful, with a country flavor and naive innocence. A large bunch will stand alone in a simple canning jar or enamel pitcher. Like it's name suggests, keep cutting the flowers to enjoy indoors and it will reward you with abundant fresh new blooms.

"Envy" helps to fulfill my love of green flowers.

"Persian Carpet" is a low growing variety, fantastic in the border with its exotic petal shapes, intricate patterns and hot colors in gorgeous shades of mustard, maroon, yellow, red-orange and cream.

Zinnias are super easy to grow from seed given a sunny spot. Sow them directly in the garden after the threat of frost has passed and nights have warmed. Keep moist until germination and they will grow quickly. To encourage bushiness you can pinch back the tip of the plants once they have a few pairs of leaves. Disease-wise, they are susceptible to powdery mildew in very humid areas. I find this usually happens in later summer after I've already enjoyed a bounty of flowers. Being annuals they are easy to pull out and remove if they become unsightly.

Zinnias are a food source for butterflies and hummingbirds and are seem to be especially loved by children. I remember my grandparents' garden fondly and zinnias stand out bright and colorful in my memories.

Washington DC

We took a family trip to Washington DC this past weekend. In terms of weather and enthusiasm it was awesome! Blue skies, windy, a little chilly, no cherry blossoms... but limited crowds.

I could seriously camp out for days in the museums. The Renwick was our first stop. They are currently hosting an exhibit of items from the WWII Japanese internment camps. The focus was on crafts made by the detainees using materials on hand. It was amazing and humbling to see the beauty that arose from such limited materials and circumstances...uplifting and heartbreaking at the same time. Unfortunately photography was prohibited for this exhibit.

The rest of the museum is just full of wonderful pieces of American craft. The family especially enjoyed Larry Fuente's "Game Fish" sculpture.

The National Museum of Natural History...well that needs several days....we had three hours....sigh... Of course the kids loved seeing the dinosaur skeletons and fossils.

I could just lose myself in the beauty of the mineral collection. The Hope Diamond is exquisite of course, as were the other cut gems. The natural mineral forms and patterns however, just blow me away.

In the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden, "Graft" by Roxy Paine caught the eye. The large metal tree sculpture was shining in the bright sun against the blue sky. Just awe-inspiring.

We also saw the Terra Cotta Warriors display at the National Geographic Museum. I remembered so many of the details from when it was published in the magazine. Again a fabulous exhibit that we were unable to photograph.

This sort of trip requires a lot of walking. Little legs finally gave out the second day. Dad had to do some carrying.

I hope the kids will remember this trip as a good time. I know they'll remember the cold as we waited to go up in the Washington Monument, and the long walks EVERYWHERE :^) We definitely plan to visit again in a year or two.

Sneak Peek - Polymer and Moonglow

I can't say exactly why Moonglow beads have suddenly captured my attention. I bought a few vintage necklaces years ago. I took them apart for their beads and have held onto them ever since. A random decision to search Etsy for Moonglow beads has reignited a long banked fire. Combined with a sudden compulsion to listen to Roy Orbison and I'm not sure what's going on....lol.

I purchased a bunch of them on Etsy. They've started rolling in and I've begun playing with them. The first pieces I made were along the line of the sun necklace. I cut out a hole, not reserving the removed clay, and planned to use a Moonglow bead in the middle. Experimenting with a tube to punch out the hole I discovered it would make a nice side bead.

These are a larger size than my typical pendants. The blue and white flower piece is approximately 1 3/4 inch (4.3 cm) across. They will probably be finished in a simple, slightly rustic fashion on a cotton or leather cord.

While shoveling the light snow the other day, I noticed that the packed snow from my trip to the bus stop with the children did not easily shovel away. The patterns left by the wheels resembled ancient writing or corn field symbols. Was I sending a message to the heavens?

I loved the division of space and the graphic quality.

One thing for sure, it was a lot easier to shovel than the 6-8 inches we got last night will be!

Material and Technique Test -Three Dimensional Dots

In the past I've done some polymer work where I added dots to create patterns. The dots were always either clay squished into clay, or paint dotted on.

Only dimensional fabric paint gave me the three-dimensional dots that I was after. However, I found the surface tended to stay slightly tacky and would pick up dust and dirt.

Messing around with some polymer clay materials I ended up with nicely dimensional dots with no tackiness. They even glow a little with side-lighting.

Off to play some more!

Okay, so since I bought my belt/disc sander I admit I've been a little facet happy.

In the works are some combination necklaces using a variety of faceted materials. The green set is faceted polymer and faceted unfinished scrap wood. The red and gray set is faceted polymer and faceted acrylic. I'm scrounging around for more things to facet. I want to do a piece using as many different materials as I can. I'm still working on whether or not to use smaller beads in between, as I really like the simplicity of a few chunky 'crystals'.

So today I was thinking about faceting some scrap wood to make beads (which I did). I wanted to do irregular crystal forms like my polymer beads. I envisioned incorporating them into necklaces along with my polymer crystals.... I'm not sure where I made the jump, but I started thinking how interesting it would be to have a faceted bead that is half wood, half polymer... I was just about to do one when the ring image popped into my head.

I think they came out pretty interesting for a first attempt. I'm going to wear these around a bit to test out the sturdiness of the join, although they held up to initial attempts to pull them apart. The wood needs a fine sanding to smooth edges, and maybe a wax coat... not sure yet.

These were done with soft scrap wood. If the clay holds up I'll be looking into some finer hardwoods.

Next experiment -the half wood, half polymer beads I was envisioning.

This morning I was working with my newly engraved acrylic sheets that I use to make bracelets. As I was handling them I noticed the way the sun lit up the engraved sections and cast fabulous shadows. I had to snap a few shots. Shortly after, the clouds came in and it grayed up. Luckily I caught some of the warmth to look at and enjoy today.

Sneak Peek -Technique Experimentation

When I purchased my last shipment of acrylic I bought some ivory colored sheets, even though I'm not crazy about the color on its own. Immediately the idea of a scrimshaw-type technique popped into my head. I know I want the effect to be somewhat naive, delicate and old-fashioned feeling...completely the opposite of 'plastic'. I tried my hand at it for the first time yesterday.

Admittedly this is super simple, some of the lines are awkward and I'm working with a beat up old engraving point from my college years. I'll probably keep this one for myself and do quite a bit more experimenting with different tools and line qualities. I do like how this combines such an old craft with a more modern material, softening it.

Starting the New Year with a Warm Heart

In so many ways, and to so many people it has been a long and 'interesting' year. Personally it was a difficult one for me and I'm not lying when I say I will be glad when it is over. Before this year ends however, I would like to wish all my friends and family a very Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year. I'm hoping that this New Year brings only peace, good health, prosperity and good cheer to those I hold dear.

Facets

I've been wanting to do some faceted polymer pieces for a long time. I had an idea in my head of how I wanted them to look... like natural crystals, with uneven, organic facets.

I finally broke down and bought a disk/belt sander so I could make them just like I envisioned. These range in size from 1/4 inch to just under 1 inch. I still need to drill them (crossing fingers). I'm imagining them clustered in groups, perhaps in a color gradation.

I had to buff them lightly to clean the dust. That softened the facet edges a little. I like them that way, but also liked them harder edged. I've ordered some finer grit paper for my disc sander. I'm hoping that will give a finer finish and I can keep the facets sharper.

New Tool Alert -Drill Press

A new addition to the work station. The drill press was sitting unused in my Mother-in-law's garage for the last 10 years. She had mentioned several times that she wanted someone to take the tools and put them to good use. Starting to fear she'd give them away, throw them away or yard-sale them...we finally took her up it.

It just needed a little dusting off, some oil on the steel, and some bolts to fix it to the bench top. It works beautifully on the acrylic that I've been playing with and opens so many more doors to creativity..... what can I make next?

I finished my newest product line, but ran out of good light to photograph, so listing will have to wait a day. :^)

Fun, bright, engraved acrylic rings in the same style as my bracelets. I also made a few key-rings and am working on some rings made of bent bands, like my bracelets.

I've really been enjoying working with the acrylic and it has me brainstorming another line combining the acrylic with my polymer clay work.... but that may have to wait until after the holidays. I've only got so much time and energy. :^)

Sweet Little Color Break

I just felt the need to enjoy color today. Fall is almost over and we're headed into the starker, spare colors of winter. I felt the need for a last huzzah! of color so I treated myself to a bouquet of sunflowers. I always have found the spiral pattern of the seed head to be so fascinating, but these flowers also sport such gorgeous colors.... almost a rainbow!

Kaida Fetching

Gray rainy day playing fetch with my cat. Really.

Kaida loves to chase and bring back small, fuzzy, sparkly balls we call sparkle balls. She brings them to me while I work in my studio and drops them at my feet. Her favorite is going up and over the couch. Typically she retrieves 10-12 times before she gets tired of the game or Kanye steals the sparkle ball.

Forgive the poor quality, it's a first for me!

Beauty in Decay

As much as I love nature in full bloom, there is undeniable beauty to be found at all stages of life.

These particular ferns are a favorite of mine. They are Onoclea sensibilis, sensitive fern. So named because they react quickly to dry conditions. I started my fern bed with one tiny frond, spotted in the lawn while mowing and carefully transplanted.

Stopping by the fern bed one chilly morning I first mourned the loss of the cool bright green I so enjoyed. The earliest tiny fronds, so full of promise, are a favorite source of leaf impressions for my pendants.

Growing larger they enchant with their lovely shape and fresh color.

Today I was noticing the withering, drying fronds and feeling a little sad.

Looking closer I started to notice the individual cells... changing color... a beautiful pattern started to emerge.

I walked away from the bed feeling re-energized and hopeful for what had been and what is still to come.

Pendants in Process

I've experimented with this before, but I don't know why I never did more with it. I initially made some pendants by impressing leaves and designs into clay. These were meant to painted and resin-coated. I never finished them and have a ton of them piling up.

Yesterday I absently grabbed a blob of clay and pushed it into the impression in the original pendant. I really like how the image is now raised and did a bunch of them.

Trial and error -polymer likes to stick to itself...even if one is cured. I found freezing the pendants helped maintain the shape while removing. I've also mixed a home-made mold release that I'm going to give a try. I mixed a small amount of mineral spirits and petroleum jelly to the consistency of cream. I am going to brush on and let dry. We'll see how it goes!

Newest Wood Head

I mentioned in an earlier post that I have a thing for carved wooden heads. Here's the newest addition to my collection. He stands approximately 6 3/4 inches high, is flat bottomed and unmarked. He is painted black. The weight makes me think he could be oak.

I was drawn to him as he looks Nordic (to me) and reminds me of my travels in Denmark. It was in Denmark at a flea market (kremmermarked) that I spotted (and unfortunately passed up) the first carved wooden heads. So began my obsession.

Celosia 'Orange Temple Bells' -for drying

I collected these Celosia cristata 'Orange Temple Bells' just before several rainy days. They are now hanging upside-down in the basement rafters drying. I wish I could keep the color as bright.

Once dried they turn a lovely antique red/pink shade, with a very slender stem and wonderful shape.

While walking out in the garden today I noticed that the goldenrod is just starting to bloom. I needed to cut some of the celosias for drying and was inspired to fill a mason jar with a bright and gorgeously untidy bouquet. Kanye came to inspect and seemed to approve.

Heirloom Tomatoes

I love growing (and eating!) tomatoes. My favorite way is sliced, still warm from the sun. Toast your bread, a little mayo, salt, pepper and a sprinkle of chipotle. Tonight we're having a salad of sliced tomatoes, basil from the garden, local goat cheese, salt, pepper, and a dash of balsamic vinegar.

My favorite varieties are all heirlooms. Over the years I've grown Brandywine, Black Krim, Garden Peach, White Wonder, Great White, Oxheart, Striped Roman, Green Zebra, Eva's Purple Ball, Giant Belgium, Sausage, Hillbilly, Omar's Lebanese, Mortgage Lifter, Flame, Persimmon, Costoluto Genovese, Jaune Flammee, Anna Russian, Burgundy Plum, Mr. Stripey, Cuor di Bue, and Yellow Pear.

Some were wonderful...Brandywine, Black Krim.

Some were quirky and fun...Green Zebra (green when ripe, with lovely bronzey stripes) -also tasty, Garden Peach -actually fuzzy, looks like an apricot!

Some were disappointments...white and yellow tomatoes -just bland!.

Every year my stand out favorite has been Hillbilly. It's a large, indeterminate, beefsteak variety. Every year I am knocked over by the beautiful patterning of the fruit and am rewarded with the delicious large slices.

It hasn't been a good garden year for tomatoes. We had a long, cool, soaking-wet spring. The hot weather plants are now just starting to jump and produce, so I was quite excited to find Hillbilly starting to ripen. I think this will be the tomato in our salad tonight! .........and maybe my lunch sandwich as well. :^)

Silicone Molds

I decided that going the "Completely One-Of-A-Kind" route, and doing all my pendants with resin pours, was doing me in with the labor-intensive steps.

I've decided to add a line of simpler, rustic pendants using molds of my own design. I purchased a product called Knead-a-Mold, from Townsend Atelier. It creates a silicone rubber mold that sets in less than 10 minutes. The final mold can be used in the oven (for polymer) and is food safe as well. I've done my first batch using polymer clay in the molds. I also tried resin, but my first experiment with resin confirms I need a mold release agent....oops!

I've had some interesting new process mistakes, and wasted a bit more material than I would have liked -both resin and the mold material, but I'm excited about the possibilities!

Slow Going

It's been a difficult Spring and Summer. I'm used to working hard and getting things done. Lately my left foot has been having some swelling problems that I'm sure are related to my surgery. My doctors have been sending me for tests so we'll see where that ends up.

I've been making some new pieces (and having some difficulty with new techniques...), and have been having a hard time getting them listed.

School starts in a few weeks for the kids -I look forward to extra time to get things done, but feel a little sad as well.

Have you ever just felt like everything was difficult? Results come slowly, troubles come quickly?

I don't want to turn into a complainer, and I'm struggling against that.

Wooden Head

I've felt drawn to carved wooden heads for some time now. I've kicked myself several times for not buying the three carved heads I saw in a Danish flea market a few years ago. The ones I passed up only improve in perfectness and affordability in my mind, as time passes. :^)

When I spotted this head online a few weeks ago I bought it on impulse and I LOVE IT!

I think I'm starting my official wooden head collection now.

Ovarian Cancer -Etsy Project Embrace and Overcome Ovarian Cancer 5K Walk 2009

Followers of my blog may already know that I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in April of this year. I underwent surgery in May, had a complete hysterectomy, appendectomy and numerous biopsies. I was very lucky to be diagnosed at stage 1A. Throughout the diagnosis and surgery I strove to maintain a positive outlook and I know that I am very, very lucky to have been diagnosed so early.

Recently I have become aware of two very worthy fundraisers in the battle against ovarian cancer. I am an artist selling on Etsy and was recently approached by fellow Etsian, and friend, Amy of ThePeachTree. Amy asked if I was interested in participating in an Etsy community-wide project in aims of raising money for cancer research and to promote awareness in support of (and honoring) Laura -a wonderfully creative and vibrant artist. Laura has recently been diagnosed with ovarian cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy. You can read more about her on her profile page. I don't know Laura, but feel a kinship and wish her only the best.

Called 'etsyprojectembrace', participating sellers are donating a portion of their sales to the Etsy Project Embrace Team benefitting the American Cancer Society. Fun Bugs

I love making these little bug stickers. I use a roll of gummed kraft packing tape, some sharpies and a little acrylic paint. I punch out shapes and decorate them with fun little bugs and flowers. I use some of the scrap pieces to make co-ordinating decorative pieces. I plan on doing more for my shop... maybe do some on moleskine books.

This is good work for me to do right now... I can just sit and draw, while I take it easy.

What a Week

So I've been out of commission for a week. Really out of commission. Last Tuesday, May 26th, I woke up not feeling too well. I had stomach and abdominal pains. As the morning progressed I began to feel severely chilled and light-headed. I put my son on the bus for school and called my husband to come home. I ended up in the ER, then was transferred and admitted to my original surgical hospital with a post-surgical abdominal infection.

The last week has been spent in the hospital -fighting the infection, having lots of blood drawn, pushing my I.V. stand around the halls and trying to eat the hospital food. The staff was wonderful, and really helped to make it bearable.

I finally came home yesterday. I am tired and hooked up to funky drainage stuff -ick!, but oh so glad to be home again!

Beginnings

I feel like I've been given a new one...a new beginning.
We meet with my doctor on Wednesday to go over the final pathology results in more detail, and discuss any further care, but we were given the results over the phone and it sounds like good news. It was in fact ovarian cancer, but it was limited to the right ovary. Twenty-one lymph node biopsies have come back negative, as did biopsies on everything else they removed...which was pretty much everything else.

Looking forward to moving ahead again. There is still so much I want to do!

Comfortable Companionship

This is the couch where I am spending most of my day -recuperating, reading, napping, posting, and thinking. I lean against the pillow at the end. I am kept company by Kanye, who spends most of the day in this position. I love to reach up and pet him. He lets me rub his belly and doesn't even open an eye.

Taking it Slowly

I'm in recovery and am having a really hard time taking it slowly. I'm not supposed to lift anything over 10 pounds, .45 kilos, for 6-8 weeks. It is hard to bend and my back is trying to compensate for the stomach muscles that I can't use, so it's starting to ache. I can accept help with the laundry, cooking, and dishes...;^). The garden is a bigger task and makes me a little sad. Bindweed is taking over my perennial bed, thistle and silver maples are sprouting up. I have to keep reminding myself -there's next year!

I really miss Etsy and will probably open shop again soon. I've been brainstorming some new pieces, ones that don't require as much tedious physical work. Maybe tomorrow I'll start playing with my ideas.

About all I can do right now is read. I did manage to get into the garden to shoot a few photos, but even that is tiring. It's hard to bend down to get the close shots I like.

Guess this is just going to be a venting post... I'm allowed to have some of those right?

...while you're making plans. Right? Isn't that how the quote goes?

Well, we had a lot of plans for this year, this summer.

A family vacation to D.C., Maryland, and Baltimore.

A huge vegetable garden, especially for my son who missed out on Mom gardening because of all the upheaval in our lives the last two years. I want my kids to remember me as a gardener, so they might get bit by the gardening bug one day. :^)

Fixing up the house.

Doing fun day trips together as a family.

Rejuvenating the neglected and overgrown perennial beds......

.....Then I woke up with a pain in my side. An ultrasound showed a large cyst. Follow-up tests suggest possible ovarian cancer, but I'm feeling unexpectedly upbeat right now, and the doctors are cautiously optimistic. When it comes out and they give me a definitive outcome, then I'll be upset if I have to be. My husband on the other hand is overloaded and worried...but he is being so strong!

Surgery is scheduled for sometime on Thursday, May 7th. I may be out of touch and commission for some time...or I may be bed-bound with just a laptop to keep me occupied and I'll post like a maniac. :^)

Either way...if you read this, please keep me in your thoughts on Thursday.

'Hillbilly' in a Recycled Newspaper Pot

So far the recycled newspaper pots are holding up really well. This seedling is the same one shown in my initial post detailing my experiment, and is an heirloom variety known as 'Hillbilly'. Growth is equal to the plastic pot seedlings, the only difference being the necessity to water a little more often -the newspaper wicks water from the soil. Oh, and cute whiskery little roots are starting to work their way through the paper.

One point of potential concern, the pots become a little moldy which may be an issue for someone with allergies to mold.

Flowers from my garden...as a small Thank You!

When I first started on Etsy I was so impressed by the quality of artwork, quality of promotion, and the high levels of dedication of so many of the people there.

As I became more and more familiar with the site certain artists began to stand out. One of the first people to make a very strong impression on me with her consistent level of artwork and dedication to creating stunning collections in the Treasury was Amy from ThePeachTree. Her skills in quality presentation and promotion make her an admired web entrepreneur.

Amy's distinctive photographic style is easily recognizable. I love her artistic use of focus, lighting and framing.

In addition to Amy's awesome shop she keeps an inspiring and impressive blog, The Peach Tree.

I always enjoy Amy's great taste in her selections of intriguing pieces for her Peach Picks series, full of wonderfully explored subjects and themes. Her *FEATURED ARTIST of the week* series has been a lovely introduction to many inspirational artists. This one is a charming interview with Etsy artist Winklepots. Also enjoyable are glimpses into daily adventures...like row-boating in Central Park, complete with personal snapshots, like this great photo of sunning turtles.

Usefulness

My Mother's parents lived through the Depression. They were hardworking, rural, Pennsylvania folks. I remember vividly, growing up and watching them save everything -repair, re-use and re-purpose until it falls apart. Tools, dishes, fabrics, wood....all acquired a smoothness, a patina, well-worn patching, chips. All spoke of value in the intrinsic usefulness of an item. Looking back, what might have seemed poor and shabby to some speaks to me of honesty and thrift.

When I have to throw away some bit of modern junk that unfortunately cannot be repaired I feel a sadness and a loss of connection.

That is why I treasure a small collection of clothespins that I found at a yard sale. Some are apparently handmade...squared and chamfered, worn smooth by many years of hard-working hands. My favorite however is a simple little pin with evidence of thrift and value. Evidently splitting after many years of use, a single small nail has been hammered through to hold the split. The free end of the nail has been carefully bent over and pushed into the wood to keep it from catching fingers or cloth.

Repotted!

The first batch of seedlings has been re-potted. I made both plastic cup pots, and recycled newspaper pots. I am also watering the seedlings with a dilute fish emulsion fertilizer. They are a lovely deep green and have beautifully stocky stems.

The tomatoes can be potted up buried all the way to the cotyledons, or "seed leaves". New roots can grow from any point on the stem and this will create a deeper, stronger root system.

Making Seedling Pots

The seeds have been doing well under the lights and are in need of transplanting. I make my own re-usable plant pots by drilling drainage holes in 5 oz. plastic cups. In the interest of recycling I decided to try an experiment. In addition to the plastic pots I am gong to make some pots out of recycled newspaper. I want to see how well the newspaper pots hold up, and how well the plants thrive compared to my plastic cup method.

First the plastic cups. I use 5 oz. plastic cups and simply drill holes in the bottom with a Dremel.

For the newspaper pots I purchased a wooden pot making tool. You simply cut newspaper into 3.5" x 10" strips which you wrap around the barrel portion of the tool. I chose to do a double thickness of paper. The bottom of the wrapped paper is folded over and you push it onto the round wheel-shaped form. I gave it a twist and added one staple, just to give it a little extra sturdiness.

The pots felt reasonably sturdy. I appreciated the addition of the staple and the doubling of the paper. I like my pots sturdy. :^)

First True Leaves

The first true leaves have appeared on most of my first batch of seedlings. This means that they are soon ready for re-potting. I am going to try an experiment this year. Every year I use plant pots that I make out of 5 oz. plastic cups. I like them as they are a great size, they fit nicely in the flats, I can write information on them if needed -using a Sharpie, they hold up well, and I can re-use them from year-to-year.

In the interest of recycling and being more eco-friendly I have purchased a plant pot maker that uses strips of newspaper to make biodegradable pots. In the near future I will post a demo on making both kinds of pots. I want to compare how well they stand up and how well the plants thrive. I am not including peat pots as I don't like them. I find they draw too much moisture out of the soil if not kept constantly moist. If peat pots are not removed at planting, and the top edge is above ground, they can wick moisture away from the roots. Others may have good results with peat... I find them too expensive for the uneven results.

They've been taking swimming lessons for maybe 7 months now. He started younger and had little fear. She started older. It was really tough in the beginning -the fear, the tears, the frustration. She's come a long way. I can tell she's proud of herself for how far she's come and I see her confidence growing each time we go.

Germination

The first seedlings are up. It took only three days for germination.

Broccoli, Kale, Celosia, and Dahlia all have been moved out of the domes. I should move them to the lights in the garage where it's cooler. The furnace room is a good bit warmer than the garage and I want to slow their growth a little. It is also good practice to start a fan gently blowing on them. The movement of their stems helps to make them sturdier and the airflow helps prevent disease.

I found this little hedgehog gall today, while walking to the bus-stop to pick up my children after school. It reminded me of how I feel all winter...like I'm holed up in a shell, feeling prickly and unpleasant, while inside I wait for spring so I can emerge.
